How We Build Decks & Fences
Outdoor structures live or die by what's below grade and how they're fastened. Our process is built around Ottawa's climate — frost, freeze-thaw, and heavy snow load:
- 1
Design & Site Visit
We measure the site, check grades and drainage, locate utilities (locates are booked before any digging), and help you choose materials — pressure-treated, cedar, composite, PVC, or aluminum.
- 2
Quote & Materials Plan
You receive a written quote with a material breakdown and a realistic install window. Fence lines shared with neighbours are confirmed before work starts.
- 3
Footings & Posts
Deck footings and fence posts are set below Ottawa's frost line so they don't heave with freeze-thaw cycles — the single biggest difference between a fence that lasts 5 years and one that lasts 25.
- 4
Framing & Finishing
Structures are framed to Ontario Building Code spans and fastened with exterior-rated hardware. Decks over 24 inches get code-compliant guards and stairs.
- 5
Final Walkthrough & Cleanup
Gates adjusted, site raked clean, excess material and old fencing hauled away. We walk the finished build with you before we call it done.
What Affects Deck & Fence Cost in Ottawa
Per-foot and per-square-foot prices vary for real reasons. These are the main ones:
Material choice
Pressure-treated is the budget workhorse; cedar costs more but ages beautifully; composite and PVC cost the most up front and the least to maintain.
Ground conditions
Rocky soil, tree roots, high water tables, or old concrete footings in the post line slow down digging and can require augering or excavation.
Height, spans, and features
A 6-foot privacy fence uses more material than 4-foot; decks with stairs, railings, or multiple levels add framing and labour.
Removal of existing structures
Tearing out and disposing of an old deck or fence is quoted separately so you can see exactly what the new build costs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most fences don't need a permit but must respect the City of Ottawa fence by-law heights. Decks generally require a building permit when they're attached to the house or more than 24 inches above grade — we confirm and handle it during the quote.
We build from spring through late fall. Booking in winter or early spring gets you the best slot — mid-summer dates fill quickly.
Below the frost line — roughly 4 feet in Ottawa. Shallower posts are why so many fences lean after a few winters. Ours don't.
Composite costs more up front but needs no staining and won't splinter or rot — over 15 years it's often cheaper. Wood wins on up-front price and natural look. We'll show you samples and real cost comparisons for your project's size.
We recommend agreeing on style and cost-sharing before work starts. We confirm property lines from your survey and can provide separate quotes if costs are being split.
